MGT 662 Project

MGT 662 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Winter 1998

I would like you to apply the methods which we discuss in class to a process or service system with which you are familiar. It may be something you do with work, or it may have to do with something on campus or whatever. At Columbia University, for example, students looked at the comfort level of classrooms, and tried to determine what could be done to improve the classroom environment. You should incorporate ideas from both halves of the quarter into the project. In other words, you should apply the quantitative material, as well as the organizational behavior/human resource material. This includes determining what affects quality, what kind of quality system is now being used, and how the quality can be improved.

I would like you to work on the project in groups, but if you desire you can do it individually. For me, group sizes of 3-5 work best, but again I am open.

The first phase of the project will be a short (about 1 page) proposal. This will allow you to begin thinking about a particular application while we discuss topics in class. It will also allow me to approve the project ahead of time. The proposal should state which process or processes you plan to analyze, who your contact person will be, what data you plan to collect and/or analyze, and why you have made the choice you have. The proposal will be due on Tues., Jan. 27.

The second phase will be a report of the significant findings on your part. As stated above, the report should synthesize all of the material discussed in class. I want this project to be interesting and exciting to you. The material will best be learned by trying it out yourself in a "real-world" environment. Have fun with it.

The project will be due the last day of class.
