The plan was to beat the summer heat
with an evening drive along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway, one of Utah's
most beautiful highways. It had rained off and on most of the day in Salt
Lake City, mostly sprinkles with a few short showers lasting no more than
10 minutes. The Heins and Brittains had babysitters and were not going
to miss a chance for an evening drive, even if it was raining. We had
mostly gentle showers the first hour of the drive, which included the
southern shore of the Jordanelle Reservior and the alpine meadows along
the Provo River. As we began the ascent to Hayden Pass, the rain became
heavy and the temperatures dropped into the thirties. Once we crossed
Hayden Pass and started the descent into the Bear River Valley along the
Hayden Fork, it began to snow. After a quick stop for pictures, we decided
dinner back in Kamas was starting to look like the best choice for the
rest of the evening. Traffic was very light and we were back in Kamas
by 7:45 for dinner at the Gateway Grille.
