Terri and Terry visited us over the Christmas Holidays, so we decided to go down to Moab for a couple of days to visit Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. We had just gotten the Jeep, so T and T rented a four-wheel drive SUV and we explored some of the off road areas of Canyonlands.
We drove down to Moab the day after Christmas. The first afternoon we went to Arches and did some hiking around the rock formations. We got an early start the second day and took the road from Highway 191 to Gemini Bridges, a double bridge over a deep canyon. We were the only people at Gemini Bridges, which was quite a treat. It was like we had the whole wilderness to ourselves.
We visited a couple of overlooks in Canyonlands, which took more time than we planned, but we had a great time hiking the rim area. We then headed down the Shafer Trail into the Colorado River Canyon, a road that features spectacular views and a daunting descent down a large rock slide. We drove a short way on the White Rim Trail, but we were out of time and had to abandon our plan to spend much more time driving the White Rim Trail around the inner canyons. We will have to do it another time.
We were able to visit a couple of Dead Horse Point Overlooks down in the Canyon. We had visited Dead Horse Point State Park when we went to Moab for Thanksgiving this year. You can see the two overlooks we visited at Christmas on the far right side of the picture we took from Dead Horse Point State Park, plus you can also see the Shafer Trail coming down from the Islands in the Sky area of Canyonlands. In the White Rim Overlook picture, you can see the Potash Road Overlook on the far left side of the picture.
We had a great time and really enjoyed visiting a couple of remote areas of the Canyonlands where we were the only people for miles. We hope to get back soon and spend more time driving the White Rim Trail.
